Kenny Garrett [Trio Logy]

What an album!, this took me a while to get into this, as the title suggests, this is a trio [Saxophone/Bass/Drums], in the past i've always avoided Jazz discs without a secondary melody instrument, they're so hard to find a continuity to them, in Jazz one instrument plays off another, and real sparks are created, but a Saxophone out front on its own?.

It's a real testament to Garrett's skill that he can fill any gaps in, this disc made me work/listen harder to hear the tunes buried beneath the surface, but once you discover how to dig, what a treasure awaits you!, this was a defining moment for me in Jazz.

I must say something about the booklet, it's a superb photograph by Lisa Peardon, one of the very best shots on a cover of a disc i've ever seen, the brown monotone study is tremendous, the white lettering to the left side is mine, they're transfers i rubbed on, i love to be reminded who's playing while i listen to a disc, and this booklet makes the music even more treasurable.

Well on to the music!, my favourite track is track 5 'Wayne's Thang',

Here's Garrett playing Wayne's Thang live on YouTube, but this time in a Quartet setting, with Kenny Kirkland on the Piano, not as good a version on this disc, but it gives you an idea what it's about.
