I bought this disc on the strength of the opening song 'She Cries Your Name', which i heard on a compilation disc, that i reviewed in my Blog last year [13th July 2010], and so i dipped my toes into a Beth Orton studio album, and there's this voice in the back of my head saying, 'you're wasting your money, the lead track is probably the only best thing on it, the rest will be filler', yep, i know that voice, and it's certainly proved to be a true statement many times, but 'nothing ventured nothing gained' right?, you have to take some risks to find some treasure, and i'm pleasantly surprised that the album doesn't descend into what i thought it would.
Beth Orton is English, now 40 years old, originally she wrote music in the genre 'Folktronica' [Folk+Electronica], which is very much what this album could be considered, but there's so much acoustic leanings everywhere, and this is the direction she went in on subsequent albums, the booklet front cover isn't particularly inspired [photography by Ellen Nolan], this goes for all her albums, but Trailer Park is probably the best.
