My favourite Beethoven Quartet, when i play the Middle String Quartets, it's always this one that stands out from the pack, i played this early last year [11th March 2010], and it's good to re-visit this set again, one thing i notice about the Tokyo Quartet, they're a little on the sweet side, it works perfectly with the more Mozartian Early Quartets, but here it would have been nicer to have a little more gusto and vehemence, more dynamic and shocking in certain areas, but they certainly work the Beethoven magic.
The Tokyo String Quartet have been around for over 40 years, they originally formed in 1969, they have re-recorded these Beethoven Middle Quartets in 2005, these were originally recorded in 1989 & 1990, i haven't heard the re-recordings, this set of three discs, with Quartets 7-11 are fantastic, the front cover is great too [by Christian Steiner],
