Beethoven - Piano Concerto 5 [Larrocha/Chailly-Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin]

What a wonderful 3 disc 'fatbox' set this is, now very rare, and i'm glad that i've got a copy, it's available on Amazon for nearly £60!, and i must admit that it's worth it!, i listened to the whole of this today, and Larrocha is excellent, well paced readings with lots of individual touches, she does everything just about right, and great sound to boot, and unlike some other sets, this one includes the Choral Fantasy as well, i enjoyed her early Beethoven Concertos [1 & 2], full of life and vigour, usually i write these off as second rate Mozart, but here they were inspiring, this is the first time i've played this set, and i'm well pleased with it.

Alicia De Larrocha was Spanish, she died nearly 3 years ago, she was born in 1923, and died at the age of 86, she was the Queen of playing Spanish music, mainly Albeniz and Granados, she recorded this work in 1983, the booklet / front cover photo is terrific [by Christian Steiner], showing Larrocha standing by her piano, nice pose, nice dress too, nice colour, and the lettering is perfect, well laid out and positioned, this is a gorgeous set to own.
